This suspense thriller represents J.D. Tallard's first published work.  The novel was written many years ago, but Tallard indicated an unwillingness to put any of his or her more recent works in its place stating that "the sheer time and effort of writing one's first novel requires that it have the respect of being the first published".  Tallard has acknowledged that the idea for Deranged Impulse was the result of having fallen victim to a stalking, but stresses that the similarity stops there stating that "the novel is a complete work of fiction".

Diane Marini wants nothing more than to be a confident, independent and self-sufficient woman.  In her drive to obtain these attributes she makes the decision to leave the security of her family and home town to attend law school in Toledo, Ohio.  Diane is a conflicted young woman who was raised as the youngest child and only girl in a strict Italian-American family.   While she desires a law degree to provide her financial  independence, Diane also wants to meet the man of her dreams.   For a young woman who has historically been secretly involved in relationships of questionable moral value, the goal of finding “Mr. Right” goes dangerously wrong.

Diane’s nervousness about venturing out on her own lessens. She develops a circle of friends.  Diane is a popular young woman who could date any young, promising law student, but Diane falls into her old rut when she sets her eyes on Gary Baxter.  Gary is a handsome, filthy rich attorney who, unbeknownst to Diane, also teaches upper level law courses on an adjunct basis at the University of Toledo.

The security of Diane’s ideal social and academic life soon is threatened with the onset of disturbing telephone calls which escalate in their intensity and threatening tone.  We soon realize that she has fallen victim to a stalker.  He is a man who knows no middle ground.  If he cannot possess Diane, then he will kill her.   The severity of the danger facing Diane is evident when we learn that in an abandoned apartment building in South Toledo, Michelle Palmer, a former first year law student,  has been held captive, tortured, raped and threatened with death for one year.  Her disappearance went unnoticed until the investigation began into Diane’s stalking.  It is through Michelle’s thoughts that it is revealed that the path down which she previously journeyed was strikingly similar to Diane’s own life. 

Despite our hope that Diane’s stalker will be caught and Michelle will be freed, we soon come to know that their existence is mutually exclusive.  In order for one of them to survive, the other must die.

 As the police investigation unfolds, the tension rises as each newly discovered fact creates another suspect.  Michelle and Diane shared the same friends, the same romantic suitors and a love for the handsome Gary Baxter.  We watch as Diane’s world shatters around her.  Will she be murdered by the hands of someone near and dear to her?  Will Michelle be spared?  Will the police be able to stay one step ahead of this deranged predator?
